Available beginning July 1, 2026, the CPTP Leadership Journey is one program within the
CPTP Leadership Suite, designed for newly appointed supervisors. The Leadership Journey
Program replaces the former Mandatory Training Requirements for classified supervisors in
Groups 1 and 2. Leadership Journey is designed to equip new supervisors with the
knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for success in any supervisory role. The curriculum
builds the following core competencies:
- Managing Performance
- Demonstrating Emotional Intelligence
- Cultivating Trust within the Workgroup
- Demonstrating Courage
- Communicating Effectively
- Delegating Effectively
- Developing Performance
- Displaying Professionalism
- Applying Leadership Strategies
To develop the Leadership Journey program, CPTP conducted a comprehensive review of the existing supervisory training
model, identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement. Best practices from Fortune 500 organizations and state
government training programs were also examined. Using the Louisiana Competency Model as a foundation, CPTP has
created a program that provides meaningful depth while preserving efficiency and learner flexibility.
The new structure consists of two required instructional blocks focusing on fundamental supervisory responsibilities,
followed by optional learning paths that allow supervisors to personalize their learning experience.
Block 1: Managing Performance
Block 1 addresses the core needs of new supervisors during their first year. It provides foundational knowledge and skills for day-to-day managerial tasks through eight web-based training (WBT) courses:
- CPTP SCS Essentials: Where Do You Fit in the State Civil Service System?
- Making the Shift to Supervisor
- Setting the Foundation: Initial Team Building
- Managing Leave and Attendance
- CPM Performance Planning
- Everyday Performance Management
- Addressing the Gaps
- CPM Performance Evaluation
Upon completion of the web-based courses, participants will complete two instructor-led training (ILT) sessions:
- Performance Planning and Evaluation
- Moving Performance Forward
The deadline to complete all courses in Block 1: Managing Performance is nine (9) months from the date of appointment as a supervisor or assignment in the Leadership Journey Program.
Block 2: Becoming a Leader
Block 2 advances leadership development and consists of five web-based courses and two instructor-led (ILT) courses, which may be completed in any order.
Web-Based Courses:
- Leadership 101: Building Your Deck
- Leading with Emotional Intelligence
- Developing Others
- The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups
- Supervisors’ Guide to Resolving Team Conflict
Instructor-Led Courses:
- Leading Through Challenging Situations
- Developing Performance Through Delegation
The deadline to complete all courses in Block 2: Becoming a Leader is nine (9) months from the completion date of Block 1.
Learning Paths
Learning paths consist of courses centered around specific supervisory topics.
These paths allow supervisors to deepen their skills in specific areas most relevant to their roles,
while not overloading supervisors with course requirements that are not relevant to their current role.
The following paths will be available beginning July 1, 2025:
- Leading High Turnover Positions
- Skills-Based Hiring
- Designing Continuous Improvement Initiatives
- Leading with Emotional Intelligence
- Coaching and Developing Performance
- Decision Making
- Driving Vision and Purpose
- Conflict Management
- Leading Innovation
- Building and Supporting Teams
Learners will explore learning paths and will choose to take one course in one learning path as part of Block 2.
Beyond that one course, learning paths are optional for supervisors in the program.
Agencies may mandate learning paths for some or all of their supervisors.
The Leadership Journey Program will launch on July 1, 2026. The following transition guidelines apply:
- Supervisors who complete their mandatory training requirements before this date will not be required to complete the
new program; however, the annual continuing education requirement remains in effect.
- Supervisors currently enrolled in the existing program may complete it before July 1, 2026. Any supervisor who has not
completed the existing program by June 30, 2026, will be enrolled in the new program.
- Supervisors appointed between January 1 and July 1, 2026, will be enrolled in the current Mandatory Training Program
and will transition to the new Leadership Journey Program when it is released. To minimize training gaps, the following
existing courses will substitute for the new program requirements:
Existing 2015 Mandatory Supervisory Training Courses
- SCS CPTP CS Essentials
- SCS CPTP Leave Management
- SCS CPTP Validating Employee Performance
Leadership Journey Course Substitutions (available 7/1/26)
- SCS Essentials: Where Do You Fit in the State Civil Service System?
- Managing Leave and Attendance
- Everyday Performance Management
Additionally, the course CPTP Performance Planning and Evaluation, which is required for the Leadership Journey Program, is also available during this period.
Resources to assist agencies with the transition to the Leadership Journey:
The annual continuing education requirement remains in effect. Continuous learning ensures supervisors remain informed
of current statewide policies and best practices in leadership
For calendar year 2026, any of the following courses will satisfy this requirement:
- CPTP Performance Planning and Evaluation
- CPTP How to Stay Relevant WBT
- Any 2026 Leadership Academy Virtual Event
There are currently no mandatory training requirements for Group 3 supervisors; however, participation in any CPTP
leadership program is encouraged. Development is underway for Leadership Pinnacle, a future program designed for
classified employees in executive-level positions, scheduled for release in early 2027.
